About Us - Our Story

The Festival Consort from left to right: David Hogan Smith, Joanna Bramel Young, Robert Cronin and Alan Paul.
The Festival Consort was founded in 1976 by Lyn Elder and Joanna Bramel Young to play at the Northern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire. From there the ensemble began performing vocal and instrumental music of fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth century Europe. In the 1980’s the group was chosen by Columbia Artists to tour the United States with Community Concerts. Over the years the Consort has perfomed at colleges and universities as well as for many festive occasions throughout northern California.

David Hogan Smith, director, researches and edits all of the works performed by the group. The music is published under David’s imprint The King’s Trumpetts & Shalmes. He also carefully adjusts and tunes the double reed instruments -- shawms, crumhorns and douçaine. Robert Cronin, builder of renaissance double reeds, built the curtal and all of the shawms played by the group.
